Doctors Brad Hickman and Xander Ferguson shielded their eyes as their travelers arrived back in their individual capsules. Brad smiled and was about to congratulate the pair but saw nothing but anger on the two men’s faces. He watched as Brian got out of his pod and stormed off toward the elevator. “Your job is done,” he said as he walked and gestured over his shoulder with his thumb. “Old psycho there has your information.” He continued walking until he had disappeared into the elevator.

“That went well then,” Xander said sarcastically and proffered his open palm to Adrian, whose look mirrored Brian’s, with added danger. “USB, please. I will send it to the colonel myself.”

Lieutenant Dickerson pulled the thumb drive out of his pocket and tossed it to the scientist, who, after a couple of juggles, caught it. “This happens when you send a member of the public on a military mission,” he said and stared at the doctor. “It will not happen again.” He walked off, following Brian’s route.

The two doctors looked at each other and shrugged. It wasn’t the first time they had seen Dickerson lose his shit, and with the pressure being added by the colonel, he was bound to lose it more often. Xander passed the USB drive to Dr. Hickman. “Send that to the colonel straight away. No looking,” he ordered, before heading off to his office.

Brian made his way back to his room with his guard, Randy Jenkins, at his side. “Tell me, what is Dickerson’s major malfunction?” he asked, looking at the young soldier as they walked. “He seems a bit too tightly wrapped for a place like this?”

The soldier shook his head. “I don’t know, but I have been advised firstly to keep out of his way, and secondly, do not annoy him, as people get hurt around him,” Randy said. “He normally doesn’t work on the base. He and his security section are here to deal with problems, in such a way that we won’t even know about it or want to.”

“Bugger, I wish I hadn’t wound him up now,” Brian said with a sigh as he reached his suite’s door, where the other guards stood to attention, loosely speaking. “Cheers, boys. I guess we’ll catch you at dinner.” He opened the door then walked in, seeing Dana resting on the sofa reading a paper that she had been given by a guard.

She looked up with a smile and folded the newspaper in half before throwing it onto the coffee table. “How was your trip, Brian? Did you enjoy it?” Dana asked and instantly saw the truth in the man’s face. “Ah, not a good start then.”

He threw himself down next to her and rested his head on her shoulder as she patted his thigh before interlocking their hands. “At times it was fine, but that Lieutenant Dickerson is several shades of psychotic. I swear he’s bipolar or something,” Brian said.
